Farming Rural 08

Michael (Mike) J Sevcik

March 20, 1945 ~ February 20, 2022 (age 76)

Michael (Mike), J. Sevcik 76, of Kewaunee passed away on Sunday afternoon, February 20, 2022 after a sudden cardiac arrest. He was born in Kewaunee on March 20, 1945 to the late T. John & Lorraine (Nowicki) Sevcik. He was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Church where he was baptized and confirmed.
He grew up on the family farm in West Kewaunee. He attended Holy Rosary Catholic School, Kewaunee High School & graduated class of 1963, where he remained close with many classmates. He completed the Farm Short Course at UW Madison.
Mike married Jean Stroobants on November 28, 1968 at Holy Rosary Church.
A few years later, he purchased their own dairy farm in West Kewaunee where he & Jean raised their family. Even after his farm accident in 1975 which left him partially paralyzed, with Jean’s help, he continued to farm for another 25 years.  He loved the farm and put his heart and soul into it.  He could fix anything with duct tape and baler twine. His farm is where he taught his kids the value of hard work, taking care of the animals first and you don’t put gas in a diesel fuel tractor.
Harvest season was special for Mike. His IH Combine was his pride and joy. He loved combining his crops as well as for his neighbors. That was the last farm implement he sold only a couple of years ago.
After retiring from farming, he enjoyed working for Pagels Ponderosa for many years, he’d run for parts with his faithful dog Snickers riding with him. He also discovered the joy of cooking and gardening. He loved to cook, whether it was a holiday feast or simply a hearty batch of chili. He was proud of his garden and gave away tomatoes & other produce to his family & neighbors.
He was grateful to live in a community with neighbors who were like family. He helped whomever he could and in 1984 when their barn burned down, the outpouring of support from his neighbors was overwhelming.
More than anything, Mike loved his family and cherished his role as husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jean; their children Christopher (Roxanne) Knight, Suzi (Kelly Rortvedt) Sevcik, Jesse (Victoria) Sevcik; five grandchildren; Cameron Knight, Cole, Lauren, Caroline & Kate Sevcik. Survivors also include one brother, Steve (Sue) Sevcik, and sisters, Rita (Dave) Kelliher, Mary Beth Kennedy, Janine Watts; sisters-in-law Patti (Jim) Chapman, Jill (Dave) Borley along with numerous nephews and nieces.
Mike was preceded in death by his in laws, Earl & Laverne Gillis, along with Earl’s second wife Delores Reed; one brother John, brothers-in-law Perry Gillis & Harry Watts. And most recently, the best dog in the world, Snickers.
Special thanks to Bonnie at Bellin, Kewaunee Rescue, West Kewaunee Emergency Medical Responders, Deacon Chuck, Father Jim Dillenberg and his neighbors and friends who always checked in on him.
